ARTIST PROFILE:
Ross Melles is an Auckland west coast artist who lives near Bethells Beach with his wife (secretary/manager) and four children. He is teaching art at present in a secondary school and dividing his time between this and painting. His studio is located at his home.

Ross studied Art History at Auckland University. Whilst training in art teaching in the Manawatu, he worked with the NZ sculptor, Paul Dibble. Paul encouraged Ross to work on a larger scale in paint and construction and he also dabbled in metal casting and other sculpting techniques during his time in the Manawatu.

Ross has painted for over many years now and his work hangs in collections in England, Germany, Japan, The US, Singapore and Australia not to mention New Zealand. He works in acrylics and oils with other media, at present and is concentrating on the light and forms that emerge on the Tasman coast, presided over by a voluminous, clean sky.

Ross is interested in the minimal part that man plays in the landscape, and so figures often to play a minor role in his work at the moment. The palette in his paintings emphasizes colder and metallic colours of the coast. He often tends toward abstraction in his works, which gives them a moody quality.

Ross has held six shows so far in the five years His work is currently exhibited in west Auckland and city galleries.
